Historical context

Founded in 331 BC by Alexander the Great, Alexandria in Egypt served as a major Mediterranean centre under Roman rule. Following the death of Constantine the Great, his sons Constantius II and Constans were both elevated to the rank of augustus on 9 September 337. While Constantius II received Egypt and other eastern territories, Constans governed the prefectures of Italy, Illyricum, and Africa, maintaining an uneasy peace with Constantius II until Constans was murdered by the usurper Magnentius in 350.
