Historical context

Julian, remembered as Julian the Apostate in the Christian tradition, ruled as Roman emperor from 361 to 363. Proclaimed emperor by his troops at Lutetia in 360, he avoided civil war when his predecessor and cousin Constantius II died, having designated Julian as his successor. During his reign, Julian engaged in an ambitious military expedition against the Sasanian Empire before being mortally wounded during the Battle of Samarra in 363. This coin was produced at the ancient seaport and major Mediterranean hub of Alexandria during his rule.
