Historical context

Struck at Ambianum, this billon or bronze large AE2 belongs to Magnentius's short reign, during which he was concerned with asserting his legitimacy against the Constantinian dynasty. Lacking a dynastic claim, he sought popular support through public and religious reforms while presenting himself as a liberator from Constans's tyranny. The obverse bears the legend "D N MAGNEN-TIVS P F AVG", while the reverse carries the legend "SALVS DD NN AVG ET CAES" alongside a chi-rho flanked by alpha and omega.
