Historical context

This Large AE2 piece was struck in Ambianum during Magnentius's reign. As a ruler unrelated to Constantine the Great, Magnentius lacked a dynastic claim to imperial power and spent much of his rule seeking popular support and asserting his legitimacy, framing himself as a liberator from Constans's tyranny. The reverse design features two winged Victories holding a wreath inscribed "VOT/V/MVLT/X" above a low column, accompanied by the legend "VICTORIAE DD NN AVG ET CAE", while the obverse presents the ruler's portrait with the legend "D N MAGNEN-TIVS P F AVG".
