Historical context
Constantius II, a son of Constantine the Great, ruled as Roman emperor from 337 to 361. Having received the eastern territories, including Greece, Thrace, Egypt, and the Asian provinces, he spent much of his reign occupied by a prolonged and costly war against the Sasanian Empire on the eastern frontier, as well as navigating civil conflicts against usurpers such as Magnentius.
This Large AE2 bronze and billon coin was minted in Antioch, Syria, an imperial mint within Constantius's eastern sphere. The obverse identifies the emperor with the imperial title and legend "D N CONSTAN-TIVS P F AVG". The reverse depicts a helmeted Roman soldier spearing a fallen horseman wearing a cap, combined with the legend "FEL TEMP RE-PARATIO". This reverse design and slogan formed part of the coinage struck across imperial mints during this era of military challenges on the borders.
