Historical context

Julian, known historically as Julian the Apostate, ruled as Roman emperor from 361 to 363 after serving as Caesar of Western Rome from 355. Struck between AD 361 and AD 363, this gold solidus was produced at Antioch in Syria, the former capital of the Seleucid Empire that functioned as a major urban centre and the seat of the comes Orientis from the early 4th century. Julian's reign concluded during his military campaign against the Sasanian Empire, where he died in 363.
