Light miliarensis in silver struck at Antioch, Syria under Jovianus, AD 363–AD 364, catalogued as RIC VIII Antioch 226. Obverse: Bust of Jovian, pearl-diademed, draped, cuirassed, right.

Reverse: Jovian, draped, cuirassed, standing front, head right, holding spear in right hand and globe; standing under an arch with fluted columns. Obverse legend: D N IOVIAN-VS PEP AVG. Reverse legend: GLORIA ROMANORVM.

Historical context

Following the death of Julian in battle during his Persian expedition, Jovian was acclaimed Roman emperor by the army in June 363. After concluding peace with the Sasanian Empire, he spent his brief seven-month reign journeying toward Constantinople before dying in February 364. This light miliarensis, a large silver denomination first introduced under Constantine the Great, was struck at Antioch, Syria, during Jovian's reign between AD 363 and AD 364.
