Historical context

Constantius II was Roman emperor from 337 to 361, having previously been elevated to Caesar by his father, Constantine the Great, in 324. Following Constantine's death in 337, Constantius became Augustus alongside his brothers and received the eastern territories, including Thrace, Greece, Egypt, and the Asian provinces. His reign involved protracted warfare against the Sasanian Empire in the east and internal conflicts against usurpers such as Magnentius.

Struck at Antioch in Syria, this coin is a siliqua, a modern term applied to small, thin Roman silver denominations produced from the fourth century onwards. The denomination originated on the premise of being valued at one twenty-fourth of a gold solidus. The obverse depicts Constantius II wearing a pearl diadem and looking upward, whilst the reverse displays the inscription "VOTIS/XV/MVLTIS/XXX" enclosed within a wreath.
