Gold multiple in gold struck at Aquileia under Constantine II, AD 337–AD 340, catalogued as RIC VIII Aquileia 1. Obverse: Bust of Constans, laureate, rosette-diademed, draped, cuirassed, right.

Reverse: Constans, draped, cuirassed, standing left, holding standard with Chi-Rho on banner in right hand and sceptre in left hand; to right, Victory standing, crowning him with wreath and holding palm. Obverse legend: FL IVL CONSTANS - PIVS FELIX AVG. Reverse legend: GAVDIVM POPV-LI ROMANI.

Historical context

This gold multiple was struck between AD 337 and AD 340 at the ancient Roman mint of Aquileia, a major Roman city and military colony situated on the river Natiso near the lagoons of northeastern Italy. Constantine II became Roman emperor alongside his brothers in 337 following the death of Constantine I, ruling Gaul, Hispania, and Britain. The coin depicts his youngest brother and co-emperor Constans, who held the administration of Italy, Illyricum, and Africa. Constantine II's attempts to exert authority over Constans led to conflict and a failed invasion of Italy, culminating in Constantine's death in battle near Aquileia in 340.
