Reverse: Victory, winged, draped, standing right, and Libertas, draped, standing left, supporting between them a plain shaft carrying a trophy; Victory holding palm over left shoulder; Libertas holding transverse sceptre in left hand; Victory's hand supports the shaft above Libertas' hand. Obverse legend: IMP CAES MAG-NENTIVS AVG. Reverse legend: VICTORIA AVG LIB ROMANOR.

Historical context

In January 350, the Roman general Magnentius was acclaimed emperor in Gaul after the assassination of Constans. Lacking dynastic ties to Constantine the Great, Magnentius styled himself as a liberator from tyranny to build legitimacy, but he faced civil war from the eastern emperor Constantius II. Between 350 and 352, this gold solidus was struck at Aquileia, a major Roman city and former colony at the head of the Adriatic, before Magnentius was ultimately defeated and died in 353.
