Historical context

Magnus Magnentius was acclaimed Augustus by the army in Gaul on 18 January 350 as a replacement for Constans, whom he quickly killed to gain control over most of the Western Empire. Because Magnentius was unrelated to Constantine the Great and lacked a dynastic claim, much of his short reign involved asserting his legitimacy. Constantius II, brother of Constans, refused to recognise him, sparking three years of civil war.

Struck at the Aquileia mint under the authority of Magnentius, this large AE2 billon and bronze coin portrays Constantius II on the obverse, accompanied by the legend "D N CONSTAN-TIVS P F AVG". The reverse depicts two helmeted soldiers with spears and shields flanking an imperial standard, accompanied by the legend "FEL TEMP RE-PARATIO". Although accepted in the Western provinces, Magnentius was ultimately defeated by Constantius II, dying by suicide in August 353.
