Solidus in gold struck at Aquileia under Constantius II, AD 352–AD 355, catalogued as RIC VIII Aquileia 180. Obverse: Bust of Constantius II, pearl-diademed, wearing crested and diademed helmet, cuirased, facing front, holding spear diagonally over right shoulder in right hand and shield decorated with ? in left hand. Reverse: Roma, helmeted, draped, enthroned front, and Constantinopolis, draped, enthroned left, head left, supporting a wreath inscribed VOT/XXX/MVLT/XXXX; Roma holding spear in left hand; Constantinopolis holding sceptre in left hand, her right foot on prow. Obverse legend: FL IVL CONSTAN-TIVS PERP AVG. Reverse legend: GLORIA - REI - PVBLICAE.

Historical context

Constantius II, a son of Constantine the Great, became Roman emperor in 337 and reigned until 361. After the usurper Magnentius assassinated his brother Constans in 350, Constantius waged a civil war, defeating Magnentius at Mursa Major in 351 and Mons Seleucus in 353, leaving him as the sole ruler of the Roman Empire. This solidus, a gold denomination originally introduced by Constantine in the early 4th century, was struck between AD 352 and AD 355 at the northern Italian mint of Aquileia, celebrating imperial vows during Constantius's consolidated reign.
