Historical context
Julian, a nephew of Constantine the Great, served as Caesar of Western Rome from 355 to 360 before reigning as Roman emperor from 361 to 363. Having governed Gaul successfully, he was proclaimed emperor by his soldiers in 360, and his cousin Constantius II named him as successor before dying. This billon coin was struck between AD 361 and AD 363 at Aquileia, a major Roman city and military colony founded in northeastern Italy.
