Historical context

Flavius Claudius Julianus, remembered as Julian the Apostate, served as Roman emperor from 361 to 363. A nephew of Constantine the Great, he governed Gaul as Caesar from 355 until his soldiers proclaimed him emperor at Lutetia in 360, subsequently succeeding to the imperial throne following the death of Constantius II in 361. This billon coin was issued under his rule between AD 361 and AD 363 at Aquileia, a major Roman city and military colony established in 181 BC at the head of the Adriatic.
