Solidus in gold struck at Aquileia under Jovianus, AD 363–AD 364, catalogued as RIC VIII Aquileia 246. Obverse: Bust of Jovian, pearl-diademed, draped, cuirassed, right.

Reverse: Roma, helmeted, draped, enthroned front, and Constantinopolis, draped, enthroned left, head left, supporting a wreath inscribed VOT/V/MVLT/X; Roma holding spear in left hand; Constantinopolis holding sceptre in left hand, her right foot on prow. Obverse legend: D N IOVIAN-VS P F P AVG. Reverse legend: SECVRITAS - REI - PVBLICAE.

Historical context

Jovian served in the imperial bodyguard and was proclaimed Roman emperor by the army in June 363 following the death of Julian during his Persian expedition. A Christian whose brief reign ended the revival of polytheism under Julian, Jovian governed the entire Roman Empire as a single polity. Unable to cross the Tigris, he concluded peace with the Sasanian Empire on humiliating terms and spent the remainder of his seven-month reign travelling back towards Constantinople before dying at Dadastana in February 364. This issue was struck between AD 363 and AD 364 at Aquileia, a major Roman city in northeastern Italy founded as a military colony in 181 BC.
