Historical context

Jovian served in the imperial bodyguard and was acclaimed Roman emperor by the army in June 363 after Julian died fighting the Persians. After concluding a peace agreement with the Sasanian Empire, he governed during a seven-month reign until his sudden death at Dadastana on 17 February 364. This billon coin, minted at Aquileia between 363 and 364, reflects his short tenure as the sole ruler of the Roman Empire.
