Gold multiple in gold struck at Aquileia under Constans, AD 340–AD 350, catalogued as RIC VIII Aquileia 35. Obverse: Bust of Constans, laureate, rosette-diademed, draped, right, holding cornucopiae on left shoulder.

Reverse: Constans, helmeted, crowned by small Victory, draped, cuirassed, advancing right, head left, dragging bound captive with right hand and holding spear and shield in left hand; before emperor, woman, kneeling right, head toward emperor, raising arms in supplication; in exergue, arms. Obverse legend: FL IVL CONSTANS - PIVS FELIX AVG. Reverse legend: VICTORIA AVGVSTI - NOSTRI.

Historical context

Flavius Julius Constans, the youngest son of Constantine the Great, was made augustus alongside his brothers in September 337. In 340, his eldest brother and co-emperor Constantine II invaded Italy but was defeated and killed by forces loyal to Constans in battle near Aquileia, a major Roman city in northeastern Italy. Constans ruled the praetorian prefectures of Italy, Illyricum, Africa, and Gaul until January 350, when the usurper Magnentius overthrew and killed him.
