Historical context

This coin was issued under the authority of Constantine II, who reigned as Roman emperor from 337 to 340. The eldest son of Constantine I and Flavia Maxima Fausta, he assumed imperial power alongside his two brothers following his father's death, governing Gaul, Hispania, and Britain until his death during a failed invasion of Italy in 340. It was struck at Arelate (modern Arles), a city of considerable importance in the Roman province of Gallia Narbonensis.
