Historical context

Constantius II was elevated to the rank of Caesar by his father, Constantine the Great, in 324, and became Augustus alongside his brothers in 337. Following the suicide of the usurper Magnentius after the Battle of Mons Seleucus in 353, Constantius II ruled as sole emperor until his death in 361. This coinage was struck under his authority at the mint of Arelate (modern Arles), a major city in the Roman province of Gallia Narbonensis.
