Historical context

This bronze coin was issued under Constantine II, who ruled as Roman emperor from 337 to 340. Following the death of his father, Constantine I, he and his surviving brothers took power after eliminating potential rivals, with Constantine II governing Gaul, Hispania, and Britain. His reign ended in 340 when he died during an invasion of Italy against his brother Constans. The piece was manufactured at the mint of Arelate, modern Arles, an important settlement within the Roman province of Gallia Narbonensis.
