Historical context

Constantius II was Roman emperor from 337 to 361, ruling the Roman Empire during a period marked by civil wars, court intrigues, and border conflicts. After defeating the usurper Magnentius in 353, Constantius became sole ruler of the empire. In 355, following the execution of his cousin Constantius Gallus, Constantius promoted Gallus's younger half-brother Julian to the subordinate imperial rank of Caesar.

This silver reduced siliqua was struck at the mint of Arelate under the authority of Constantius II. The obverse depicts Julian as Caesar with the legend "D N IVLIANV-S NOB CAES", representing his junior imperial status following his elevation by Constantius. The reverse features the inscription "VOTIS/V/MVLTIS/X" enclosed within a wreath, marking imperial vows undertaken during his time as Caesar.
