Historical context

Julian, later known as Julian the Apostate, was appointed by his cousin, Emperor Constantius II, to govern Gaul as Caesar in 355. Julian was one of the few members of the imperial family to survive the purges and civil wars during Constantius's reign. In 360, Julian was proclaimed emperor by his soldiers at Lutetia, sparking a civil war, though Constantius died before they met in battle.

This silver reduced siliqua was produced at the mint of Arelate under the authority of Julian. Despite Julian's position, the coin bears the portrait and obverse legend of Constantius II, "D N CONSTAN-TIVS P F AVG". The reverse display features the inscription "VOTIS/XXX/MVLTIS/XXXX" enclosed within a wreath.
