Historical context

Julian, remembered as Julian the Apostate, ruled as Roman emperor from 361 to 363, having previously served as Caesar of Western Rome from 355 to 360. Appointed to govern Gaul by Constantius II, he was proclaimed emperor by his troops at Lutetia in 360. Following Constantius's death, Julian became the sole ruler of the Roman Empire and sought to restore traditional Roman values and pagan practices.

Produced at the mint of Arelate, this bronze and billon AE3 issue features the imperial titles "D N IVLIAN-VS P F AVG" accompanying the diademed portrait of the emperor. The reverse design presents Julian in military dress, helmeted and holding a globe and spear, paired with the legend "SPES REI - PVBLICE".
