Historical context

Julian, known as Julian the Apostate in the Christian tradition, served as Caesar of Western Rome from 355 to 360 and reigned as Roman emperor from 361 to 363. Appointed by his cousin Constantius II to govern Gaul in 355, he was proclaimed emperor by his troops at Lutetia in 360. Following Constantius's death, Julian became the last non-Christian ruler of the Roman Empire, seeking to restore ancient Roman traditions and values.

Struck at the mint of Arelate, this bronze and billon AE1 piece bears Julian's obverse imperial titulature, "D N FL CL IVLI-ANVS P F AVG". The reverse combines the legend "SECVRITAS REI PVB" with imagery of a standing bull beneath two stars, accompanied in the field by an eagle perched upon a wreath whilst bearing another wreath in its beak.
