Historical context

Constantius II became Augustus on 9 September 337 alongside his brothers, Constantine II and Constans, following the death of their father, Constantine the Great. The brothers divided the Roman Empire, leaving Constantius II in control of Egypt, Greece, Thrace, and the Asian provinces. This gold solidus, a denomination introduced in the early 4th century to replace the aureus, was struck between AD 337 and AD 340 at Constantinople, which Constantine had established as the eastern capital in 330.
