Historical context
Elevated to Caesar in 324, he became Augustus alongside his brothers Constantine II and Constans in 337, receiving Thrace, Greece, Egypt, and the Asian provinces. Following civil conflict against the usurper Magnentius, who had overthrown Constans, Constantius defeated Magnentius by 353 to become the sole ruler of the Roman Empire.
Struck at the mint of Constantinople, this silver heavy miliarensis dates to Constantius II's imperial authority. The obverse bears his pearl-diademed and cuirassed bust accompanied by the legend "D N CONSTAN-TIVS MAX AVG". On the reverse, the coin displays four standards alongside the legend "CONSTANTIVS AVG".
