Historical context

Constantius II was Roman emperor from 337 to 361, having been appointed Caesar by his father, Constantine the Great, in 324. Following Constantine's death, Constantius became Augustus alongside his brothers Constantine II and Constans in September 337, receiving Greece, Thrace, Egypt, and the Asian provinces in the division of the Roman Empire. His reign was marked by warfare against the Sasanian Empire, internal conflicts, and the eventual defeat of the usurper Magnentius.

Struck at the mint of Constantinople, this bronze AE3 piece was produced under the authority of Constantius II. The obverse features a bust of Theodora facing right, dressed in a plain mantle and necklace, paired with the legend "FL MAX THEO-DORAE AVG". The reverse depicts Pietas standing front, turned right, holding an infant at her breast, accompanied by the inscription "PIETAS - ROMANA•".
