Historical context

Elevated to Caesar in 324 and Augustus in 337 alongside his brothers, he initially governed Thrace, Greece, Egypt, and the Asian provinces. Following the death of his brothers and the defeat of the usurper Magnentius by 353, Constantius ruled as sole emperor during a reign characterised by border wars and internal civil strife.

This silver coin is a siliqua, a modern designation for a small, thin Roman silver denomination introduced in the fourth century. The term has been applied since the nineteenth century on the assumption that such coins were valued at one twenty-fourth of a gold solidus. Issued at the mint of Constantinople, the coin carries the obverse legend "D N CONSTA-NTIVS AVG" and the reverse inscription "FELICITAS REI PVBLICE" surrounding "VOT/XX/MVLT/XXX" enclosed within a wreath.
