Historical context

Constantius II was Roman emperor from 337 to 361. Elevated to Caesar in 324 by his father, Constantine the Great, he became Augustus in 337 alongside his brothers Constantine II and Constans. Following the division of the Roman Empire, Constantius received Thrace, Greece, Egypt, and the Asian provinces, ruling through prolonged external wars against the Sasanian Empire and Germanic peoples, as well as internal conflicts against usurpers such as Magnentius.

This AE3 bronze and billon coin was struck under the imperial authority of Constantius II at the mint of Heraclea. The obverse bears the legend "VRBS - ROMA" accompanying a left-facing bust of Roma depicted in an ornamental mantle and a visored, crested helmet. The reverse displays the votive inscription "VOT/XX/MVLT/XXX" enclosed within an encircling wreath.
