Historical context

Constans, the youngest son of Constantine the Great, was Roman emperor from 337 until his death in 350. Initially elevated to caesar in 333, he was made augustus in September 337 alongside his brothers. After his brother Constantine II invaded Italy in 340 and was killed near Aquileia, Constans gained the praetorian prefecture of Gaul, sharing imperial power amidst ongoing tensions with his surviving co-augustus, Constantius II.

Struck at the mint of Lugdunum under the authority of Constans, this large AE2 bronze and billon coin features his co-emperor Constantius II on the obverse, identified by the inscription "D N CONSTAN-TIVS P F AVG". The reverse depicts a helmeted soldier spearing a fallen horseman who wears a pointed cap and raises both hands, accompanied by the legend "FEL TEMP RE-PARATIO". Constans ruled Gaul until January 350, when the army commander Magnentius was acclaimed augustus at Augustodunum and overthrew him.
