Historical context

Magnus Magnentius was a Roman general who served in Gaul and was chosen by the army to replace the unpopular emperor Constans. Acclaimed Augustus on 18 January 350, he killed Constans and gained control over most of the Western Empire. Unrelated to Constantine the Great, Magnentius lacked a dynastic claim and faced a three-year civil war with Constantius II, who refused to recognise his legitimacy.

Struck at the mint of Lugdunum, this bronze and billon large AE2 coinage formed part of Magnentius's effort to secure authority across the Western provinces. Lacking dynastic ties, he sought popular support by presenting himself as a liberator who freed the Western Empire from Constans's tyranny.
