Historical context

Magnus Magnentius was a Roman general who was acclaimed Augustus by the army in Gaul on 18 January 350 to replace the unpopular Constans. After killing Constans, he secured control over most of the Western Empire. Because he lacked dynastic ties to Constantine the Great, the Eastern emperor Constantius II refused to recognise him, resulting in three years of civil war that ended with Magnentius's defeat and suicide in August 353.

Struck at the mint of Lugdunum, this Large AE2 billon and bronze coin was issued under Magnentius's authority. His reign was heavily concerned with establishing his legitimacy while civil war was fought against Constantius II. The obverse presents his portrait with the imperial title "D N MAGNEN-TIVS P F AVG", while the reverse carries the martial legend "GLORIA ROMANORVM" and portrays Magnentius on horseback spearing a kneeling barbarian beside a shield and broken spear.
