Historical context
Chosen by the army to replace the unpopular emperor Constans, he was acclaimed Augustus on 18 January 350. After quickly killing Constans, he took control of most of the Western Empire. Constantius II refused to recognise his legitimacy, prompting a three-year civil war that concluded when Magnentius killed himself on 10 August 353.
Struck at the mint of Lugdunum, this Large AE2 piece dates from Magnentius's reign, during which he was concerned with asserting his legitimacy as he held no dynastic ties to Constantine the Great. The obverse presents the legend "D N MAGNEN-TIVS P F AVG", while the reverse displays two Victories holding a wreath inscribed "VOT/V/MVLT/X", accompanied by the legend "VICTORIAE DD NN AVG ET CAE".
