Historical context

Magnus Magnentius was acclaimed Augustus by the army in Gaul on 18 January 350 as a replacement for Constans. After killing Constans, he gained control over most of the Western Roman Empire. Because he lacked dynastic ties to Constantine the Great, he spent much of his reign seeking popular support and asserting his legitimacy against the Eastern emperor Constantius II, until his defeat and suicide on 10 August 353.

Struck at the mint of Lugdunum, this Large AE2 coin was issued under the authority of Magnentius in the Western Empire during the civil war against Constantius II. The obverse bears the portrait and title of Decentius with the legend "D N DECENTIVS NOB CAES".
