Historical context

Magnus Magnentius was a Roman general of Germanic descent who had served in Gaul. On 18 January 350, the army acclaimed him Augustus to replace the unpopular emperor Constans. After quickly killing Constans, Magnentius secured control of most of the Western Empire. However, Constantius II refused to recognise his legitimacy, triggering three years of civil war that lasted until Magnentius suffered defeat and killed himself on 10 August 353.

Struck at Lugdunum, this bronze and billon issue forms part of the Western coinage produced under Magnentius's authority. Lacking dynastic ties to Constantine the Great, much of his brief reign was devoted to asserting his legitimacy and seeking popular support. The coin bears the obverse title "D N MAGNEN-TIVS P F AVG" and features a reverse inscription "VICT DD NN AVG ET CAES" accompanying two Victories holding a wreath marked with vows.
