Historical context
Constantius II was Roman emperor from 337 to 361. A son of Constantine the Great, he initially ruled the eastern provinces before fighting a civil war against the usurper Magnentius, who had assassinated Constantius's brother Constans in 350. Following victories at Mursa Major in 351 and Mons Seleucus in 353, Magnentius died by suicide, leaving Constantius as sole ruler of the Roman Empire.
Struck at the mint of Lugdunum, this reduced AE2 coin was issued under the authority of Constantius II. The obverse presents the emperor's diademed, draped, and cuirassed bust alongside the legend "D N CONSTAN-TIVS P F AVG". The reverse depicts a helmeted Roman soldier spearing a fallen horseman who wears a pointed cap and raises both hands, accompanied by the inscription "FEL TEMP RE-PARATIO".
