Historical context

Constantius II was Roman emperor from 337 to 361, having originally been elevated to Caesar by his father Constantine the Great in 324 before becoming Augustus alongside his brothers Constantine II and Constans. Following the overthrow of Constans by Magnentius in 350, Constantius waged civil war against the usurper, defeating him at Mursa Major in 351 and Mons Seleucus in 353 to emerge as sole ruler of the Roman Empire. This bronze coin was issued under his authority at Lugdunum, an important Roman city in Gaul founded in 43 BC that served as the capital of Gallia Lugdunensis.
