Historical context

Following the death of Constantine I, his sons Constantine II, Constantius II, and Constans eliminated potential rivals and became emperors in 337, dividing the Roman Empire among themselves. Constantine II ruled Gaul, Hispania, and Britain, while Constantius II received the eastern territories. This coin was minted under Constantine II's authority at Lugdunum (modern Lyon), an important Roman city in Gaul that served as the capital of Gallia Lugdunensis, bearing the portrait of his co-ruler Constantius II.
