Historical context
Julian, remembered as Julian the Apostate, was Caesar of Western Rome from 355 to 360 and Roman emperor from 361 to 363. A nephew of Constantine the Great and cousin to Constantius II, he was appointed by Constantius in 355 to govern Gaul. There, he countered Germanic raids across the Rhine before being proclaimed emperor by his troops in 360, ultimately succeeding Constantius in 361.
Struck at the mint of Lugdunum under Julian's authority, this bronze and billon AE3 piece features Constantius II on both faces. The obverse depicts a pearl-diademed, draped, and cuirassed bust accompanied by the legend "D N CONSTAN-TIVS P F AVG". The reverse legend "SPES REI - PVBLICAE" surrounds an image of Constantius II in military attire, standing with a globe in his right hand and a spear in his left.
