Historical context

Julian, a nephew of Constantine the Great, served as Caesar of Western Rome from 355 to 360, governing Gaul and countering Germanic raids across the Rhine. Following his proclamation as emperor by his troops at Lutetia in 360, he became sole Roman emperor from 361 to 363. Noted for rejecting Christianity and promoting Neoplatonic Hellenism, he was the Empire's last non-Christian ruler, striving to revive ancient Roman traditions.

Struck at the mint of Lugdunum, this bronze and billon AE1 coin features Julian's bearded, pearl-diademed, draped, and cuirassed bust on the obverse alongside the legend "D N FL CL IVLI-ANVS P F AVG". The reverse depicts a standing bull with two stars above, accompanied by the inscription "SECVRITAS REI PVB". Julian sought to restore traditional religious practices and Roman values throughout the Empire before dying on campaign against the Sasanian Empire in 363.
