Historical context

Constans, the youngest son of Constantine the Great, became Augustus alongside his brothers in September 337. After Constantine II invaded Italy and was killed in 340, Constans gained the praetorian prefecture of Gaul, sharing rule of the empire with his remaining brother, Constantius II. This bronze coin was issued under Constans at Lugdunum, the capital of Gallia Lugdunensis, bearing the portrait of Constantius II.
