Historical context

Constans, the youngest son of Constantine the Great, ruled as Roman emperor from 337 until 350. Initially holding the rank of caesar from 333, he was made augustus alongside his brothers in September 337, originally administering Italy, Illyricum, and Africa. After defeating his eldest brother Constantine II in a 340 civil war, Constans acquired the praetorian prefecture of Gaul, governing the region until his overthrow and death in 350.

Produced at the Lugdunum mint in Gaul, this bronze AE3 coin presents Constans on the obverse accompanied by the legend "D N CONSTA-NS P F AVG".
