Historical context

Constantius II, a son of Constantine the Great, served as Roman emperor from 337 until 361. The solidus had been established in the early 4th century as a highly pure gold coin that served as the primary gold denomination across the Later Roman Empire. This coin was produced at the mint of Nicomedia, an ancient city that had previously functioned as the senior capital of the Roman Empire under Diocletian.
