Historical context

Julian, remembered as Julian the Apostate for his rejection of Christianity and conversion to paganism, served as Caesar of Western Rome from 355 to 360 and as Roman emperor from 361 to 363. This coinage was produced at Sirmium, a major Roman city located on the Sava river in the province of Pannonia. In 293 AD, Sirmium had been proclaimed one of the four capitals of the Roman Empire, later serving as the capital of Pannonia Secunda.
