Historical context

Constantius II ruled as Roman emperor from 337 to 361. Having become sole ruler of the empire following the defeat of the usurper Magnentius, Constantius elevated his cousin Julian to the subordinate rank of Caesar in 355. This promotion followed the execution of Julian's older half-brother, Constantius Gallus, whom the emperor had put to death in 354.

Struck at the mint of Sirmium under the authority of Constantius II, this bronze AE3 coin acknowledges Julian in his subordinate imperial office. The obverse depicts a bust of Julian accompanied by the legend "D N IVLIA-NVS NOB C", naming him as noble Caesar. The reverse shows Julian helmeted and cuirassed, holding a globe and a spear, accompanied by the inscription "SPES REI - PVBLICAE".
