RIC VIII Sirmium 96. Denomination: Solidus. Authority: Julian the Apostate. Mint: Sirmium. The obverse shows bust of Julian, pearl-diademed, draped, cuirassed, right, with the legend FL CL IVLIA-NVS PP AVG.

The reverse shows soldier, helmeted, draped, cuirassed, standing right, head left, placing right hand on head of kneeling captive and holding trophy over left shoulder, with the legend VIRTVS EXERCI-TVS ROMANORVM.

Historical context

Flavius Claudius Julianus, remembered in Christian tradition as Julian the Apostate, served as Caesar of Western Rome from 355 to 360 and reigned as sole Roman emperor from 361 to 363. Proclaimed emperor by his troops in 360, he avoided open civil war when Constantius II died and named him successor. Julian sought to restore ancient Roman traditions and values before dying during an ambitious expedition against the Sasanian Empire in 363.

This gold coin is a solidus, a denomination introduced in the early fourth century to replace the aureus, serving in Western Europe as the principal gold coin of commerce from late Roman times into the Early Middle Ages. Produced at the mint of Sirmium, the issue bears Julian's obverse title "FL CL IVLIA-NVS PP AVG" alongside the reverse legend "VIRTVS EXERCI-TVS ROMANORVM", which accompanies an image of a helmeted soldier with a trophy and captive.
