RIC VIII Siscia 125. Denomination: Solidus. Authority: Constans. Mint: Siscia. The obverse shows bust of Constans, laureate, rosette-diademed, draped, cuirassed, right, with the legend FL IVL CONS-TANS P F AVG.

The reverse shows two Victories, winged, draped, standing facing each other, holding between them a wreath inscribed VOT/X/MVL/XX, with the legend VICTORIAE DD NN AVGG.

Historical context

Flavius Julius Constans ruled the Roman Empire from 337 until his death in 350. The youngest son of Constantine the Great, he was raised to the rank of augustus alongside his brothers in September 337, receiving the administration of Italy, Africa, and Illyricum. After defeating his brother Constantine II in 340, he assumed control of Gaul before being overthrown and killed by the usurper Magnentius in January 350.

Struck at Siscia, this gold solidus represents the principal denomination introduced in the early fourth century to replace the aureus, serving as the main gold coin of commerce in Western Europe into the Early Middle Ages. The reverse bears the legend "VICTORIAE DD NN AVGG" alongside two winged Victories holding a wreath with the inscription "VOT/X/MVL/XX", referring to imperial vows, while the obverse displays the emperor's portrait and title as "FL IVL CONS-TANS P F AVG".
