Historical context

Jovian served in the imperial bodyguard and accompanied Julian on his Persian expedition before being declared Roman emperor by the army in June 363 after Julian died in battle. Unable to cross the Tigris, he concluded peace with the Sasanian Empire on humiliating terms. Jovian, a Christian emperor who governed the Roman Empire as a single polity for the whole of his seven-month reign, died at Dadastana on 17 February 364 while journeying back towards Constantinople.
