Gold multiple in gold struck at Thessalonica under Constantius II, AD 337–AD 340, catalogued as RIC VIII Thessalonica 1. Obverse: Bust of Constantine II, laureate, rosette-diademed, draped, cuirassed, right.

Reverse: Constantine II, draped, cuirassed, standing left, holding trophy on spear in right hand and resting left hand on shield. Obverse legend: CONSTANTI-NVS P F AVG. Reverse legend: GLORIA - EXERCITVS.

Historical context

Following the death of Constantine the Great, his sons Constantine II, Constantius II, and Constans became augusti together on 9 September 337. The brothers divided the Roman Empire among themselves, with Constantius II receiving Greece, Thrace, the Asian provinces, and Egypt. Although Constantius ruled the eastern territories where Thessalonica was located, Constantine II held Gaul, Hispania, and Britain until his death in 340 during an invasion of Italy. This gold issue was struck between AD 337 and AD 340 at the mint of Thessalonica depicting Constantine II.
