Historical context

Following the death of Constantine the Great, his son Constantius II was elevated to Augustus alongside his brothers Constantine II and Constans on 9 September 337. Constantius governed Greece, Thrace, the Asian provinces, and Egypt, while Constans ruled in the west until Constantine II was killed in 340. This gold solidus—a late Roman denomination introduced in the early 4th century to replace the aureus—was struck between AD 337 and AD 340 at Thessalonica, bearing the portrait and titles of Constans.
